laptop update

Good and bad news.
Bad news first. It will cost $1173.25 to repair Wendy's coffee-damaged 6-month old Sony VAIO. They want to replace the keyboard, motherboard, powersupply, and DVD-RW, among a couple of other things (like thermal sheet for the CPU). This is in addition to the money I paid to insure it and to ship it to them. (I can't believe a few drops of coffee killed the whole thing - I have my suspicions, especially since no coffee actually touched the keyboard...)
The good news is there is no way I am paying that much to fix it, so we are getting a new laptop! The top contenders right now are the Apple 14" iBook (with Superdrive upgrade) or the 12" PowerBook ("It's cute."). I'm not ruling out a PC either, and we have looked at the Sony Vaio A and S series. Prices for the two Apples seem comparable to a similarly fitted-out PC notebook.
Wrapping up, I'd appreciate any recommendations on other laptops we should consider.

I have been using Mac OS9 at home for the past several months and love it, OSX was used by me at the fellowship and it was even better. Only probably was the re-learning of the right and left click, otherwise just fine. I haven;t heard of any tech problems with the MACs either (probably not with Sony too), it may come down to a choice between operating systems. I like MAC OS and less chance of getting a virus too!
It's Amy. First off, I come to this conversation with a bent towards Macs, so I'll only comment on the two Mac choices you listed. Having seen/used both of your choices, I prefer the iBook. It's cheaper, which gives you a bit of extra $$ for Office for Mac ($300-350--you pretty much have to purchase it if you want to read/use Office applications). The iBook is light, small and for some reason, the built-in mouse seems easier to use than those on other laptops--PC or otherwise).
OSX is very easy to use and works for PC users who aren't so used to the Mac way of doing things (a wholehearted PC user at my work used it for the first time yesterday and made the enthusiastic comment, "It's better than XP!").

At this point I'll make a plug for my favorite MS Office replacement, OpenOffice. OpenOffice is an office software suite that is extremely compatible with MS Office, is available on Linux, a few Unixes, Windows, and MacOS, is Open Source, and is free! There is word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and drawing software.
Give it a shot - you don't have to give your money to MS if you don't want to. :^)

As for Office... I have a friend of a friend's cousin (twice removed) that knows a Peruvian priest, whose neighbor's mother in law has a copy of Office (for OS X). I think I can contact her...
The developer tools include the GCC compilers, emacs, etc. And... any of the UNIX goodies, you can think of... and more! (TeX, Octave, GIMP, etc). Plus all the tools to develop your own Aqua/Cocoa applications!
