Have you heard of Centralia?

"If you were driving north on route 61 in the heart of the Anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania you may have come across a detour of 61 at the top of a hill in a community called Ashland. Thinking nothing of it you would have followed the detour signs that took you around some possible road construction or a bridge being worked on and then reconnect with 61 again..."

Read the whole story at www.offroaders.com/album/centralia/centralia.htm

When I first heard of this, I thought it was a hoax.
You can do a Google search to get more info.

I heard about Centralia a few years ago (<10?) on a TV news magazine. I still don't really know what to think about it. Is it just a crazy thing that happened, or does it tell us something? Maybe it tells us that you never know what kind of crazy thing will mess up the life you had planned.

I think the real lesson here is that The Simpsons has been on long enough to relate to just about everything. Remember when Homer took over the town's waste disposal (can't you just hear the great musical number 'The Garbage Man" sung to the tune of "the Candyman"). Anyway, Homer buried all the towns waste in abandoned mines under Springfield, that is until it seeped up and took over the town, the town decided to relocate and I believe the last shot was of a Native American looking over the ruined remains of Springfield and crying.
